Chapter 15. A New Conflict

I WAS OVERWHELMED by the voice of my teacher, so close, within arm’s reach. Despite the whole host of teenagers in the classroom, my sense of smell was able to pick out the cloud of pheromones that enveloped her and the faint smell of strawberries on her lips. Or was I just imagining it, since that is how she smelled during our last encounter? Well, I was entirely sure of one thing. I wanted her right then and there. Her smell made me ache from a sudden downward rush of blood. I wouldn’t even be able to stand up and answer her now! Shit.

“Genji, could you tell us about your stay in the hospital in English?” Fumiko decided to ask me, with her charming smile and absolutely awful timing.

“Yes teacher, of course I can. But you already know about my broken legs, so can I answer while sitting at my desk?” I needed that excuse, otherwise, with a boner like this, I would the laughingstock of the whole class. Jesus, she was getting to me…

A class with her flew by in a second, and I even utterly forgot about my school fights. And, as soon as the bell rang, I asked to help Fumiko in bringing a stack of notebooks to be checked into her office. To which she answered with a quick nod, and, I thought, a slight blush. I swear, she knew exactly why I wanted to follow her so much.

We walked through the halls, not paying attention to anyone around us. Fumiko groused sweetly, and I, covering my pants with my bag, answered monosyllabically. I had one thought in my mind — to get myself alone with this woman and finally accomplish what I had been dreaming of all this time. But there was an issue in the teacher’s room. One of Fumiko’s neighboring teachers, for God knows what reason, was sitting there instead of teaching her class, typing something on the computer. I was forced, after some hemming and hawing, to leave the notebooks with Ms. Ono and make my retreat. I would have to pop in again at the end of school day…

My next class was physics, and I rushed off to the neighboring wing. This Genji would be a diligent student. The habit inculcated by my Teacher of seizing all the knowledge on offer worked in this new world as well. The class was pretty boring. The aged teacher, tired of living, monotonously read out the material. The only attraction was the little question and answer session. When he asked me, I gave a thoughtful, well-reasoned response, to the surprise of the class.

Although I didn’t say anything that couldn’t be found in the school textbook, I received surprised looks from my classmates, especially the known nerd and son of an engineer, Ichiro Hattori. Even the usually unflappable Kiyoko Takada turned around a few times, and the Wada twins stopped smacking their gum while I was talking. Huh. Genji, of course, had never loved physics, but he wasn’t an idiot.
